As Chief Marketing Officer of South African Tourism, Jan Hutton knows that the best way to market South Africa is to let South African people do the marketing for her, via word of mouth, through blogging, and by photo sharing on Instagram through the recently-launched #MeetSouthAfrica campaign. “Showing our South Africa through the eyes of our people will help us connect our destination with potential travelers who are dreaming about their next holiday destination,” says Hutton. Hutton will also rely heavily upon social media in 2014, when South Africa again hosts INDABA, Africa’s largest travel trade show.
Hutton is an unconventional marketer with experience in traditional companies like The Nielsen Company and Ogilvy, and in new media ventures such as Immedia and Stratetic Wireless Intelligence. Hutton believes digital media is invaluable to destination marketing, stating, “We see peer-to-peer communications and user-generated content as absolutely essential in the way we work going forward.”
