Turkish Airlines again signaled its aspirations to be a major player in the international airline arena in 2013 through partnerships with three of the world’s biggest athletes. This year the airline featured Kobe Bryant and European soccer star Lionel Messi in an attention-getting spot, fighting a battle of “selfies” photographed in the global cities where Turkish Airlines flies. Turkish Airlines also secured a three-year, $9 million deal with Tiger Woods to compete in the Turkish Airlines Open through 2016.
These lucrative sports partnerships were presented by Turkish Airlines’ Chief Marketing Officer, Faruk Çizmecioğlu, who also boasts an expanded fleet of aircraft, a convenient central hub in Istanbul, and an emphasis on quality service, including the “Invest On Board” digital platform for global business travelers. Çizmecioğlu spent six years at Renault before joining Turkish Airlines in 2004, becoming its CMO in 2010. In 2011, Çizmecioğlu was elected top Marketing Executive of the Year.
